Matthew 6 In My Own Words As If Jesus Gave The Sermon Today…

Matthew 6 In My Own Words As If Jesus Gave The Sermon Today…

So, I’ve been going through a real test of faith lately.  I don’t want to go into the details but for some reason this chapter of the Bible really spoke to me.  It’s interesting because I rarely find the need or desire to read the Bible that much but I was drawn to this.  Of course, if the Bible was translated to keep the message of Christ clear then I think I’d read it more often.  It is the way we’ve been taught to read it that really confuses us (and the translations don’t usually help).

Anyway, I decided to write Matthew 6 in my own words.  So you can say this is the “Dave Vass translation”… ha!  I went verse by verse and wrote what came to my heart of what I see the true message is according to the reality of Christ as if it was spoken to us believers today.

Matthew 6

Don’t follow after the religious who like to show their good deeds in front other other people.  They have their reward which is the praise of men.  Look at how they give, making it so obvious… making sure everyone can see and recognize them for it.  Again, they have their reward which is pretty shallow and won’t get any better.

But, when you give don’t fall into the same trap.  Just do what is natural to the Life within you and give without thinking about it.  It’s so freeing to live this way and not being subject to the praise of men.  Of course, you know that your Father sees all things and will reward you accordingly and His reward is far better.

Have you seen how the religious pray?  What hypocrites!  They love to pray in front of people, all formal, saying all the right things.  They look so spiritual but don’t let that fool you.  They seek man’s approval and that is all they get.  Remember all those times you’ve prayed in your office or bedroom or in your car, sometimes weeping, sometimes rejoicing, with no one but your Father seeing?  That is real prayer, from the heart and your heavenly Father hears it.  He will answer you.

And don’t worry about praying the right way.  Have you seen how the religious use so many spiritual words when praying as if that is going to somehow get God’s attention?  Your Father isn’t about perception, He looks at the heart.  And do you see how they keep asking for the same thing over and over again as if He’s deaf?  Don’t you realize your Father knows what you need before you even ask Him?

Praying is simple, not complicated.  It comes from the heart where the Spirit of God intercedes on your behalf.  Here’s what it sounds like:

“Oh heavenly Father, you are so good, and so just.  I desire that your love will reign in my heart and in my family, fill this home with your Life.  Your will be done in all things, including my business.  Thank you for forgiving me for all the times I’ve messed up and help me be just as gracious towards others.  Provide for my family as you always do and keep me from temptation and from being distracted from that which isn’t true.  Deliver me and my family from evil.  I trust you because you are in control of everything, you have all power and all things belong to you.  Amen.”

Those religious people hold you to all the things you do wrong, and have never experienced true forgiveness.  They don’t forgive and won’t be forgiven.  But, you are forgiven, so do what’s in your heart and forgive others.

Have you seen how the religious hypocrites fast and how they do pious acts of righteousness?  It’s all about appearance so that they’ll be noticed.  Well, that’s all they will get.  Let what you do flow from your heart, don’t be so concerned about what others think of you, you don’t need their praise or approval because you have your Heavenly Father who sees what you do and knows what’s in your heart.

Everyone is so concerned about getting more money and more things and then they are so afraid of losing it.  But, don’t you realize money and things are temporal and fleeting?  There’s so much more to life than money.  As the world seeks after such shallow stuff, you continue to store up real riches in Heaven where it will last and will never be lost.  You realize that where your treasure is (that which you value the most), your heart will be also.

Your eye is that which illuminates your entire body.  If your eye is clear then your body will be full of light but if your eye is bad then your whole body will be full of darkness.  And if the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

The point is that no one can serve two masters.  Don’t fool yourself into thinking you can focus your whole life on money and still serve God.  You can’t serve God and wealth.

So don’t worry so much about your life, what you will eat or drink or about your lifestyle, what you will wear or where you will live.   I know you have bills to pay but isn’t life so much more than food, bills or lifestyle?

Let me tell you something, I want you to open your eyes up to the Truth, to reality so that you can be free from worry.

Look at the birds, consider them as they do not go to work every morning and they don’t have a savings account and yet your Heavenly Father feeds them.  Seriously, if your Father looks after birds will He not take care of you knowing you are way more valuable to Him?

How does worrying help you?  Has it ever helped?  Has it ever added something to your life?  And why do you worry so much about your lifestyle and bills?  Take a look at the flowers in the field, they do not toil or spin… basically they live effortlessly.  Yet, do you not realize that Solomon, one of the richest men ever to live, at his peak of wealth couldn’t even dress himself like one of these flowers?

Think about that!

So if that is how God clothes the grass of the field which is alive today and tomorrow is mowed and thrown away, will He not take care of you and make sure you have all you need?

I know you think you’re in control of your life and I see how you get so worried.  But I tell you to stop worrying so much, see the truth and walk by faith that is in you and not by your perception.

So don’t worry all the time about how you’re going to pay the bills or how you’re going to provide for your family.  The people of the world are caught up with this and get so worried but you have a Heavenly Father who knows you need all these things.

Don’t you believe?  Of course you do, so stop worrying.

Instead, focus on what matters.  Focus on His kingdom and His righteousness and all the things you are so worried about will be given to you as well.
Again, let me just end by saying that you shouldn’t worry about tomorrow.  I realize it seems scary and you think it’s natural to worry.  But, I don’t want you to worry about the future, for tomorrow will take care of itself just like it’s always done your entire life.  Each day has enough problems and cares of its own so just take it day by day.
